International Dance Day
April 29th is International Dance Day!
This fun day was established in 1982 by the International Dance Council (CID) to promote the art of dance around the world and to celebrate the joy and beauty of movement and expression.
Whether you’re a professional dancer or just someone who loves to move, International Dance Day is a great opportunity to celebrate the art of dance and all that it has to offer.
The History of International Dance Day
International Dance Day was established by the International Dance Council (CID) (which was founded in 1973 UNESCO headquarters in Pari) in 1982 to celebrate the art of dance and to promote its importance as an art form around the world.
April 29th is an important date chosen because it is the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre, a French ballet dancer and choreographer who is considered one of the pioneers of modern ballet. Some even call him the ‘creator of modern ballet’.
Since its establishment, International Dance Day has grown into a global celebration of dance that is recognized and celebrated in over 100 countries around the world.
Each year, The CID chooses a prominent figure in the world of dance to write and official message to share across the globe as they bring awareness to their dance day celebrations and the value of dance itself.
Dancers, musicians from different cultures and creators from all over the world come together to share their love of dance and music in festivals, street performances and venues all across the world!
Why Dance Matters
Dance is a universal art form that transcends language, culture, and geography. It is a powerful means of expression that allows people to communicate their thoughts and emotions through movement and gesture. Dance has the ability to bring people together and to create a sense of community and connection.
There are SO MANY reasons to dance! Here are just a few:
- Physical fitness: Dancing is a great form of exercise that can improve cardiovascular health, increase strength and flexibility, and help with weight management.
- Coordination and balance: Dancing requires coordination and balance, which can help improve motor skills and reduce the risk of falls.
- Stress relief: Dancing can be a great way to reduce stress and anxiety, and improve overall mood.
- Social connection: Dancing is often done in groups or with a partner, which can provide a sense of community and social connection.
- Cognitive function: Learning and practicing dance routines can help improve cognitive function, memory, and attention span.
- Self-expression: Dancing provides an outlet for self-expression and creativity, which can improve emotional well-being.
- Confidence and self-esteem: Dancing can help build confidence and self-esteem by providing a sense of accomplishment and mastery.
I’m certainly no professional, but I absolutely love to dance. I’ll just put on some music and have a private dance party. It’s just so much fun!
