Hug an Addict or Alcoholic Day

February 7, 2023 All day

February 7th is Hug an Addict or Alcoholic Day!

Supporting a loved one who is an alcoholic can be challenging, but there are several things you can do to help. Here are some suggestions:

  1. Be empathetic and non-judgmental: It’s important to approach your loved one with empathy and understanding, and to avoid being critical or judgmental. Let them know that you care about them and want to help.
  2. Encourage them to seek professional help: Alcoholism is a serious disease, and your loved one may need professional help to overcome it. Encourage them to seek treatment and offer to help them find resources or support groups in your area.
  3. Set boundaries: It’s important to set boundaries to protect yourself and your relationship with your loved one. Be clear about what you are and are not willing to tolerate, and stick to your boundaries.
  4. Offer support and encouragement: Let your loved one know that you are there to support them and that you believe in their ability to recover. Encourage them to take small steps towards sobriety and celebrate their successes along the way.
  5. Take care of yourself: Supporting a loved one who is an alcoholic can be emotionally and physically draining. It’s important to take care of yourself by seeking support from friends or a therapist, engaging in self-care activities, and setting aside time for your own interests and hobbies.

Remember that recovery from alcoholism is a long and difficult process, and that relapse is common. It’s important to be patient, persistent, and supportive, and to celebrate your loved one’s progress along the way.

So today, give your loved one who is struggling to stay sober, or who is trying to get sober, a big hug today!!!
