April 30th is World Women’s Wellness Day!

This is a day dedicated to empowering women to take control of their health and well-being. It’s a day to celebrate women and to raise awareness about the importance of prioritizing self-care. 

A Bit About World Women’s Wellness Day

World Women’s Wellness Day is really important because it provides an opportunity to raise awareness about the unique health needs of women and to promote the importance of self-care and good health care!

Women face a ton of health challenges throughout their lives, including reproductive health, mental health, and chronic diseases such as heart disease and cancer. By improving our emphasis on self-care, making healthy choices, and seeking high quality medical advice, we can reduce our risk of some of these preventable and treatable conditions and improve our overall quality of life.

We, as women, have made significant progress in recent years, but there is still a long way to go. By focusing on women’s health and well-being, we can empower our fellow women to take control of their lives and to continue breaking down barriers.

10 things women need to do to take care of their health

  1. Get regular check-ups: Women should schedule regular appointments with their primary care physician for general health screenings, including blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes checks. Other specialized screenings from an OBGYN might include a colposcopy, pap smear, or other gynecology services. Not gonna lie… this is a challenge for me. I’m working on it.
  2. Stay active: Engage in regular physical activity for at least 30 minutes a day. This could include anything from walking to swimming to yoga.
  3. Prioritize nutrition: A well-balanced diet consisting of whole foods such as fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats can help women maintain optimal health. I do a decent job of this, I’m glad to say!
  4. Get enough sleep: Adequate sleep is essential for good health. Women should aim for at least seven to eight hours of sleep each night.
  5. Manage stress: High levels of stress can have negative effects on physical and mental health. Engage in relaxation techniques such as deep breathing or meditation.
  6. Stay hydrated: Drinking plenty of water throughout the day can help keep the body hydrated and functioning optimally.
  7. Protect skin from the sun: Women should wear sunscreen and protective clothing to minimize the risk of skin cancer and premature aging.
  8. Limit alcohol and tobacco use: Both alcohol and tobacco can have negative effects on women’s health, including an increased risk of cancer.
  9. Practice safe sex: Women should practice safe sex to protect against sexually transmitted infections and unintended pregnancies.
  10. Stay up-to-date on vaccinations: Women should receive regular vaccinations, including the flu shot, HPV vaccine, and tetanus booster, to help prevent illness and disease.

Some common issues women have with their health

Women of all ages face some similar health concerns throughout their lives. Some common issues include:

  1. Reproductive health concerns: Women may experience menstrual problems, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, fertility issues, abnormal pap smears, pregnancy complications, and symptoms of menopause. Many need help and advice choosing contraceptives and other therapies for reproductive health concerns such as labor and delivery, healthy pregnancies and quality care throughout their reproductive life. 
  2. Breast health concerns: Women may face breast cancer, breast cysts, and other breast-related issues.
  3. Mental health concerns: Women may experience anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues related to stress, trauma, or hormonal imbalances. It can be scary when facing a possible mental health condition, but with proper patient care, a qualified practitioner can be a huge help.
  4. Heart health concerns: Women may be at risk of heart disease and other cardiovascular issues, which are often overlooked or misdiagnosed in women.
  5. Osteoporosis: Women are at a higher risk of osteoporosis, a condition that causes bones to become weak and brittle, making them more susceptible to fractures.
  6. Autoimmune diseases: Women are more likely to develop autoimmune diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and multiple sclerosis. My mom has dealt with fibromyalgia for many years. It’s not fun.
  7. Sexual and reproductive health concerns: Women may experience sexual dysfunction, pelvic pain, and urinary tract infections.
  8. Cancer: Women are at risk of various types of cancer such as breast, ovarian, cervical, and uterine cancers.
  9. Nutrition and weight management: Women may struggle with maintaining a healthy weight and adequate nutrition, which can impact their overall health.
  10. Sleep disorders: Women may experience sleep disorders such as insomnia, sleep apnea, and restless leg syndrome. Not to mention hormonal disruptions that shock one awake in the middle of the night with horrible adrenaline rushes. That’s super fun, yo.

As women, we definitely have some pretty significant issues that men don’t deal with. It’s really important that we take care of ourselves so that we can continue to live a full and joy filled life.

There are many ways to celebrate World Women’s Wellness Day. Here are a few ideas:

  1. Prioritize Self-Care – One of the best ways to celebrate World Women’s Wellness Day is to prioritize self-care. This means making time for activities that promote physical, mental, and emotional health, such as exercise, meditation, and self-reflection. By making self-care a priority, women can reduce stress, improve their mood, and boost their overall well-being.

This can include a physical exam, a gynecological exam, and a mammogram or other cancer screenings. By staying up to date on these screenings and exams, women can catch health issues early and take action to prevent or treat them.

Sometimes we can’t control much, but if we are able take better control of our health and well-being, we can make a positive impact on our families and our communities.
