April 28th is National Superhero Day!

On this super fun and special day, we take time to honor both the real-life superheroes who make a difference in our lives every day as well as the magical mystical imaginary superheroes that entertain and delight us.

First, let’s talk about the significance of National Superhero Day and how we can celebrate and show appreciation for our real-life heroes!

The History of National Superhero Day

National Superhero Day was first observed in 1995 by Marvel Comics employees in honor of their fictional superheroes. However, in recent years, the day has evolved to honor real-life heroes who work tirelessly to serve their communities.

Particularly because of the recent global pandemic, we have a renewed appreciation for front-line workers and health care professionals. This day mean even more now!

Why is National Superhero Day Important?

National Superhero Day is important because it provides an opportunity to show appreciation for our real-life heroes who often go unrecognized. Who was the first Superhero?

The concept of a superhero as we know it today was first introduced in the late 1930s and early 1940s, and there are several candidates for the title of the first superhero, depending on what you think really constitutes a “superhero”!  Here are a few contenders:

  1. Superman – Created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, Superman first appeared in Action Comics #1 in 1938, and is often considered the first superhero. He was the first character with extraordinary powers to fight for justice and help the weak.
  2. The Phantom – Created by Lee Falk, The Phantom first appeared in a newspaper comic strip in 1936, two years before Superman’s debut. He wore a mask and costume, fought crime and injustice, and had a secret identity.
  3. Mandrake the Magician – Created by Lee Falk, Mandrake first appeared in a newspaper comic strip in 1934. He was a magician who fought evil with his powers and had a sidekick named Lothar.
  4. The Shadow – Created by Walter B. Gibson, The Shadow first appeared on radio in 1930 and later appeared in pulp magazines, comic books, and other media. He was a crime-fighter who used his powers of invisibility and hypnosis to defeat criminals.

While there is no definitive answer to who the first superhero was, these characters played an important role in establishing the genre and inspiring countless other heroes to follow.

How about the first female superhero?

The first female superhero is often credited to be “Fantomah, Mystery Woman of the Jungle”, created by Fletcher Hanks and first published by Fiction House in 1940.

However, some may argue that Wonder Woman, created by William Moulton Marston and Harry G. Peter and first published by DC Comics in 1941, was the first female superhero to gain mainstream popularity and have a lasting impact on the genre.

Both Fantomah and Wonder Woman helped pave the way for other female superheroes that would follow, and continue to be celebrated and inspiring role models for us today.
